RAINEY

There are two things I learned since Atlas kissed me. One, my father is too worried about his work to give me any attention. At all. And I don’t care about it anymore. Really, I just moved on from the need for him. I moved on because I found something so much better.

Two, I want Atlas. This is not the memory of a childish crush. Of someone I liked back then, before I learned how the world worked. Things have changed, and the feelings I felt toward him have changed, as well.

I want him completely. I want his lips on me, his hands brushing down my sides. That warmth I felt coiling deep within me? I want more of it. The things Atlas made me feel with a single kiss shoved every other worry to the back of my head. Suddenly, he’s the only thing on my mind.

He’s taken over my every thought, but I have to face it. I might have ruined things when I ran off like that.

Atlas spent the afternoon in the gym and then moved on to the kitchen. Every time I peeked from the corridor, I’d hear him clattering around pans. He wants to avoid me so much that he might be baking a cake and preparing a three-course meal for dinner.

At seven on the dot, he cries out from the living room. “Dinner’s ready!”

Warmth spreads over my cheeks as I run my hands down the sides of my body. Is this alright? I haven’t seen Atlas the entire afternoon, so I don’t know if he regrets kissing me. Should I put something else on? I glance at myself in the full-body mirror. An off-shoulder dress sweater that hits my knees. Cute, and it doesn’t look like I’m trying too hard.

Should I try harder? Would that make him want to try again? Or is my rejection set in stone now? Am I losing my chance because his kiss surprised me?

Someone knocks on the door. I almost jump out of my skin as Dad cracks it open, meeting my eyes.

“Hey,” he greets. “Dinner?”

Wow, all I had to do was give up on our relationship, and he’s even wanting to have dinner with me. I nod. “Yeah. I’m coming.”

He tilts his head toward the corridor, opening the door further. “Come on. I have like, ten minutes before I have to jump into another meeting.”

I deflate, but Dad doesn’t seem to notice. Following him out of the door, we walk into the dining room, where Atlas prepared a feast. There’s butter chicken and pork, and pasta, and rice. Two types of salad. He even opened a bottle of wine.

“Wow, what a feast!” Dad says, plopping down onto a chair at the head of the table. “Shit, Atlas. You make me feel bad.”

I take the seat to Dad’s left. My heart slams in my chest when I hear Atlas’ footsteps walking into the dining room. He puts wine glasses down, then moves in my periphery to the wine bottle.

Atlas shakes his head.
